Volunteer: Tutoring Volunteers Needed for Homeless Children's Education FundHomeless Children's Education Fund (HCEF) is seeking volunteers with prior work experience with children ages 5-14 years old to work with our Mobile Learning Program. HCEF's Mobile Learning is an innovative program that brings regular, individualized tutoring sessions directly to unstably housed students. This is a great opportunity to build kids' strengths and confidence by helping our instructors deliver a variety of fun, creative educational activities. Volunteers will support professional tutors as they lead individualized instruction for K-8th grade students. Typical session activities consist of educational games, homework help, and social-emotional learning activities for between 1-3 students living in a single household. HCEF’s professional instructors will lesson-plan and lead tutoring activities, while volunteers support student engagement via participation in session activities, positive reinforcement, and active listening. Each tutoring session requires a volunteer to take place, so volunteers quite literally make this program possible! Volunteers for Mobile Learning must commit to at least one 1-2 hour session per week. Session start and end times will vary based on family schedules. These session locations and times are based on accessibility to the students and their parent/caregiver. Mobile Learning will take place during after school hours (3:30 PM-6:30PM). With an HCEF Instructor and our volunteers, Mobile Learning takes place in residences, Community Centers, or our classroom on wheels (Winnie’s Wagon). Session locations are based on accessibility to the student and their parent/caregiver -- some will be on front porches, in families' living rooms, or at a nearby public space like a park or library. Volunteers must be comfortable as guests in spaces that may be unfamiliar to them at first and will need to be able to travel to sessions on their own. To serve in this role, volunteers will need their PA Child Abuse, FBI Fingerprinting, and PA State Criminal Clearances. We also require our volunteers to attend an in-office training before being able to start supporting our Mobile Learning program. If you are interested and wish to become a volunteer for this need, please click on the "Sign Up" radio button on the upper right corner of this screen and then email our Volunteer Specialist at volunteers@homelessfund.org to set up an initial screening meeting. Volunteer: Volunteer Online as an English Conversation PartnerReady to change a life from the comfort of home? Join ENGin as a conversation partner and be matched with a learner in Ukraine for weekly one-on-one English conversations. In just one hour a week, you can help someone build confidence, break the language barrier, and feel supported, all while discovering a new culture and making a genuine human connection. We’ll pair you up with a learner in Ukraine for weekly one hour videochats at times that are convenient for you. During your conversations, you’ll facilitate English practice for your partner, learn about each other’s cultures, and offer an empathetic, authentic space for connection. Our only requirements for volunteers are English fluency, a strong internet connection, and the ability to commit to one hour a week for a minimum of 12 weeks. No prior tutoring experience or knowledge of Ukrainian language is needed to volunteer with ENGin. We offer ample training resources, session materials, and total flexibility to customize your sessions to fit your/your partner’s goals and preferences. Our friendly team is available to support you throughout your time with us. Since our launch in 2020, ENGin has matched over 30,000 volunteers with Ukrainians for authentic English-language connection across borders, and we continue to grow every day. 99% of our learners report feeling they were able to break the language barrier as a participant in our program, and 79% of our participants form lasting friendships. We're incredibly proud of these results, and we can't wait to welcome you into this global community of volunteers making them possible. Here's what three ENGin volunteers say about their experience. "I made a friend in Ukraine and we are teaching each other about our culture, our language, and our humor. We're even trading dad jokes! Both of us look forward to our chats and have a hard time wrapping it up." “Fantastic organization doing great work. So happy to be a small part of it. My partner and I have worked together for two years and have become good friends! Her English has become better, and I have become more knowledgeable about Ukraine!” "This program has been, I think, life-changing for both of us. I really consider her more like my daughter right now. That's how close we have become!" Ready to Get Started? Volunteer: TTRPG GMs Wanted! (D&D and more!)If you know exactly what those acronyms stand for, then keep reading! The Open Door began a Gaming Group in 2024 that has become very popular with kids and teens in our surrounding neighborhoods. We began the Fall 2025 sessions with 5 different campaigns of various type, mechanics, stories, and levels. All of them are now completely full, but we have more players interested in learning! We have 2 nights for gaming at our spacious Rec Center: Mondays from 6 to 8:30 pm and Thursdays from 6:30 to 9:00 pm. Some campaigns, once established, request other nights or weekend meet ups, and we are often able to accommodate those as well. WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR IN A GM? Over the age of 16 with some experience playing a TTRPG, and a desire to try leading one.Able to secure all necessary state & federal background clearances required for working with minors (we help you with this process and assist with any costs)Willing to work with a diverse group of kids and/or teens who come from a wide range of experiences, economic levels, family types, support systems, etc. Able to commit to regular attendance for either weekly or bi-weekly sessionsWilling to put a reasonable amount of time into planning sessionsIs understanding and supportive of the many internal and external struggles faced by children & teens today, without assuming the role of advisor, mentor, or counselor. (i.e., you can listen, display empathy, encourage them to seek support ... but avoid direct advice, especially regarding political stances, religious beliefs, and gender & sexual identities. We consider ourselves to be welcoming of ALL, and want our players AND volunteers to feel comfortable with each other at all times as much as is possible.)WHO ARE THE PLAYERS? Must be at least 5th grade, which is usually age 10. However, we have made exceptions for some particularly clever & creative 4th grade students who have proven themselves worthy of being great PC's!Most of our players are in 7th-11th grade. We also have a few young adults who are playing instead of acting as GMs, which has worked out nicely as well. Also, our groups are a good mix of young men and women!Players are mostly from Crafton Heights, which is our central location. Several come from surrounding neighborhoods within about 15 minutes, and a few players travel 25-30 minutes to play their campaigns!Everyone has a variety of experiences. Some are brand new to the concept, some have played D&D for years, others only know what they've seen on Dimension 20 or by playing Baldur's Gate. We have some intro sessions to help players figure out what kind of game is best for them, and that helps immensely! Feel free to message with any further questions or clarification!
