Volunteer Needs From: Pittsburgh Cares

This summer, Lawrenceville neighbors came together to design a temporary traffic calming activation for the intersection at 48th, Plummer, and Butler St in Lawrenceville. Thanks to funding from Better Block, volunteers will be activating the intersection on September 27th. The activation will include temporary higher visibility crosswalks, a temporary bus lane, benches/planters at bus stops, solar lighting, and a tree pit clean up.

Duncan Park is a wonderful urban food forest and landscape playground maintained through the dedicated work of volunteers! Workdays involve regular chores of weeding, mowing, watering, maintaining paths, etc. Food, water, and tools are provided, but you are welcome to bring your own. Come for the whole event, or stay as long as you can.

For nearly 10 years, the Lawrenceville Organic Community Garden has provided a beautiful space for gardening, harvesting, relaxing, and simply, enjoying the outdoors with friendly folks in Upper Lawrenceville. The garden is operated by a group of dedicated volunteers and supported by Lawrenceville United. Volunteers are needed between the months of April to October to maintain the garden and this can be done once, sporadically, or consistently. Work days are Wednesday evenings from 5-7 PM and Saturday mornings from 10 AM-12 PM. The work often takes the form of planting, weeding, harvesting, watering, light clean up of general area, etc. Accommodations can be made based on people's abilities and the garden's needs. Come join the volunteers at the Bernard Dog Run (located on the Three Rivers Heritage Trail) on the second Saturday of the month from 9-11 AM to help keep the dog park looking great! The Bernard Dog Run has been maintained through volunteer efforts for 12 years, and we are always looking for new people to get involved.

Volunteering involves general maintenance of the dog park space, which includes spreading mulch, weeding, moving objects no more than 30 lbs, etc. 

LU and our fantastic weekly volunteers run a weekly Friday food distribution that delivers free boxes of food to over 30 households all around Pittsburgh! We are always looking for additional driver volunteer support. You would be helping deliver about 4-5 boxes to food-insecure neighbors who don't have a vehicle. All you need is a car, about an hour of your time anytime between 1 to 2:30 PM, and a big heart!
