Hi there! We have some students in our high school equivalency diploma (GED) program who need help to pass their math exams. They are in specific need of tutors who are available during the day. Volunteer: Tutoring Volunteers Needed for Homeless Children's Education FundHomeless Children's Education Fund (HCEF) is seeking volunteers with prior work experience with children ages 5-14 years old to work with our Mobile Learning Program. HCEF's Mobile Learning is an innovative program that brings regular, individualized tutoring sessions directly to unstably housed students. This is a great opportunity to build kids' strengths and confidence by helping our instructors deliver a variety of fun, creative educational activities. Volunteers will support professional tutors as they lead individualized instruction for K-8th grade students. Typical session activities consist of educational games, homework help, and social-emotional learning activities for between 1-3 students living in a single household. HCEF’s professional instructors will lesson-plan and lead tutoring activities, while volunteers support student engagement via participation in session activities, positive reinforcement, and active listening. Each tutoring session requires a volunteer to take place, so volunteers quite literally make this program possible! Volunteers for Mobile Learning must commit to at least one 1-2 hour session per week. Session start and end times will vary based on family schedules. These session locations and times are based on accessibility to the students and their parent/caregiver. Mobile Learning will take place during after school hours (3:30 PM-6:30PM). With an HCEF Instructor and our volunteers, Mobile Learning takes place in residences, Community Centers, or our classroom on wheels (Winnie’s Wagon). Session locations are based on accessibility to the student and their parent/caregiver -- some will be on front porches, in families' living rooms, or at a nearby public space like a park or library. Volunteers must be comfortable as guests in spaces that may be unfamiliar to them at first and will need to be able to travel to sessions on their own. To serve in this role, volunteers will need their PA Child Abuse, FBI Fingerprinting, and PA State Criminal Clearances. We also require our volunteers to attend an in-office training before being able to start supporting our Mobile Learning program. If you are interested and wish to become a volunteer for this need, please click on the "Sign Up" radio button on the upper right corner of this screen and then email our Volunteer Specialist at volunteers@homelessfund.org to set up an initial screening meeting. Volunteer: Train to teach volunteer-led ONLINE English classes 1-2 evenings Mon-ThJoin us at Casa San Jose as a volunteer ONLINE English teacher for adult immigrants! Casa San Jose is a non-profit serving the Latino community in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas and it offers adult English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to Spanish-speaking adults, 18+, in Allegheny and Beaver Counties in four evenings a week, 7:00 to 8:30pm. Classes are offered ONLINE as well as in East Liberty, Mount Lebanon and Ambridge (in Beaver County). At the moment, we have a GREATER need for volunteers to teach ONLINE, on Zoom. We are seeking those who are comfortable with Zoom, and preferably those who have LED a zoom meeting before (knowing how to screen share a document, annotate the document on screen, etc is a PLUS :), but also happy to have volunteers who are willing to learn how to do this! As a volunteer, you can do 1 to 2 nights per week. Casa San Jose offers three sessions a year: a Spring session from January to May, Summer session in June and July, and a Fall session from Sept. to November, with no classes in December. Stay with us for just one season, or stay as long as you like! While previous teaching / ESL experience is not required, it's always welcomed! You will be able to observe classes before deciding if you'd like to volunteer with us. You may choose to co-teach a class with another volunteer or teach on your own one to two nights a week. Knowledge of Spanish is also not required, but of course, it's welcomed! It's certainly helpful to know some basic Spanish when teaching the beginner level, but it's absolutely possible to teach it without. We can show you how! If you express interest in this opportunity, Trisha Powell, ESL Coordinator, will reach out to you to set up a brief one-on-one meeting on Zoom to learn more. Volunteer: Database Project for Meals on Wheels -This could be fun!!Our meals on wheels program is currently using a MS Access Database that is hosted online and our problem is that is has become very expensive (over $2000/yr) and our small program cannot afford this much longer. The issue is that the database code was written by a large meals on wheels and modified for our use. When we asked if the database can simply be installed on our PC, we were told that it's not possible the way it is written. Just for kicks, I started dabbling with Chat GPT and the database. It quickly knew much of the data needed for a meals on wheels program and seems promising. I'm not an expert in writing code and get rather lost, but for someone with experience, it will be simple to understand. Looking for some guidance and assistance in setting up a Database for a Meals on Wheels Program. Let's see how far AI can go! I'm hopeful that it won't take up too much of your time. Most everything should be able to happen remotely as well as at a time that is convenient for you. This would be huge for our program if you choose to help because a small organization simply cannot afford to hire and pay for a custom written database. That being said, after the program is set up and running successfully, we would be willing to discuss some type of fee for future maintenance if needed (there always seem to be glitches/oddities that come up with databases). While we are currently using MS Access, but it doesn't need to be. If you find that SQL or perhaps oven something like Apache open source software would be preferred, I'm open to suggestions. I hope to hear from you and thanks for the consideration. Agency: PitCare, Inc. Volunteer: Volunteer Teach adult English classes, 1-2 evenings M-Th in Ambridge (Beaver Co) starting in January!Join us at Casa San Jose as a volunteer English teacher for adult immigrants! Classes are offered in East Liberty, Penn Hills, Mount Lebanon and Ambridge (in Beaver County). As a volunteer, you can do 1 to 2 nights per week in one of our locations that is closest to you. It's certainly helpful to know some basic Spanish (or Portuguese) when teaching the beginner level, but it's absolutely possible to teach it without. If you express interest in this opportunity, Trisha Powell, ESL Coordinator, will reach out to you to set up a brief one-on-one meeting on Zoom to learn more.
