Description

The Out of the Darkness Walk chair plays a pivotal role in the success of our signature fundraising events. Funds raised by the Out of the Darkness events have a direct impact on the chapter’s ability to provide programming and resources to our chapter service areas, supporting AFSP’s mission to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide. The 2024 walk takes place September 7 at Highmark Stadium

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • 2 years removed from loss or most recent struggle
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • Must abide by all AFSP and walk policies and procedures
  • Must meet chapter onboarding requirements for new volunteers
  • Must be willing to work collaboratively with local AFSP field staff and chapter leadership
  • Must be comfortable with speaking publicly to committee, event attendees and/or media, following safe messaging and guided talking points
  • Must review and sign the AFSP Volunteer Code of Conduct

Desired Qualities

  • Previous experience in fundraising and large event coordination
  • Able to delegate tasks and appropriately follow up with committee members to ensure tasks are completed
  • Able to manage a team of volunteers
  • Comfortable listening to/empathizing with walker and volunteer stories about loss and mental health challenges
  • Understanding of basic computer/technology skills
  • Willingness to work with local field staff while also working independently
  • Able to carry heavy objects such as boxes, tables and chairs for event set up and tear down purposes

Time Commitment

A minimum of 4 hours per week. This includes a commitment to hosting monthly (sometimes bi-weekly/weekly closer to event day) planning meetings. All day commitment on the day prior to the event as well as the day of the event.

Responsibilities

The walk chair provides leadership and guidance to all committee and sub-committee members, utilizing the walk planning manual for guidance. The walk chair (alongside the volunteer coordinator, fundraising chair/committee and staff partner) will recruit and onboard new members to the walk committee to grow a network of support for the assigned event. The walk chair will oversee all “event day” activities, including set up and tear down.
