Volunteer: Volunteer Online as an English Conversation PartnerReady to change a life from the comfort of home? Join ENGin as a conversation partner! This is a flexible and unique opportunity to make a direct impact on someone’s life while discovering a new culture and meeting a new friend. We’ll pair you up with a learner in Ukraine for weekly one hour videochats at times that are convenient for you. During your conversations, you’ll practice English with your partner, learn about each other’s cultures, and offer an empathetic, authentic space for connection. No prior tutoring experience or knowledge of Ukrainian language is needed to volunteer with ENGin. We offer ample training resources, session materials, and total flexibility to customize your sessions to fit your/your partner’s goals and preferences. Our friendly team is available to support you throughout your time with us. Our only requirements for volunteers are English fluency, a strong internet connection, and the ability to commit to one hour a week for a minimum of 10-12 weeks. Since our launch in 2020, ENGin has matched over 26,000 volunteers with Ukrainians for authentic English-language connection across borders, and we continue to grow every day. 99% of our learners report feeling they were able to break the language barrier as a participant in our program, and 79% of our participants form lasting friendships. Here's what three ENGin volunteers say about their experience. "I made a friend in Ukraine and we are teaching each other about our culture, our language, and our humor. We're even trading dad jokes! Both of us look forward to our chats and have a hard time wrapping it up." “Fantastic organization doing great work. So happy to be a small part of it. My partner and I have worked together for two years and have become good friends! Her English has become better, and I have become more knowledgeable about Ukraine!” "This program has been, I think, life-changing for both of us. I really consider her more like my daughter right now. That's how close we have become!" To learn more about ENGin and become a volunteer, please visit www.enginprogram.org/volunteer. Volunteer: Goodwill Volunteer Opportunity: Daytime MATH Tutors Needed for Adult Students (Basic Math Up to Algebra 3)Goodwill of Southwestern PA is looking for individuals in Pennsylvania or one of the adjacent states who enjoy helping others to make an impact in the adult learning community by assisting instructors in the ONLINE classroom.
Hi there! We have some students in our high school equivalency diploma (GED) program who need help to pass their math exams. They are in specific need of tutors who are available during the day. It could be a minimum of 3 hours (2 sessions of 1.5 hours) or up to 4 hours each week. If you have experience teaching basic math and algebra skills and are available during the day, please reach out and we can talk more! If you don't have experience with this but are comfortable teaching someone these basic skills and believe you have the patience to work with an adult learner who struggles with these skills, please reach out. To help one of these students, you'd first meet with me briefly on Zoom to go over things, fill out a volunteer application, complete a free and quick PA criminal background check, and then we'd help you to learn about what students need to know for this exam. Once you're prepped, you could meet with the student on Zoom. Support is always available from me, the Volunteer Coordinator, and from our adult education instructors. Six-month commitment minimum please. Our volunteers do take time off here and there for trips they take, vacation, holidays, etc, but overall, 3-4 hours per week on average is required. Thank you for considering this opportunity! Interested individuals are encouraged to apply by confirming your registration here (by selecting "Sign Up"). Volunteer: Train to teach volunteer-led ONLINE English classes 1-2 evenings Mon-ThJoin us at Casa San Jose as a volunteer ONLINE English teacher for adult immigrants! Casa San Jose is a non-profit serving the Latino community in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas and it offers adult English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to Spanish-speaking adults, 18+, in Allegheny and Beaver Counties in four evenings a week, 7:00 to 8:30pm. Classes are offered ONLINE as well as in East Liberty, Mount Lebanon and Ambridge (in Beaver County). At the moment, we have a GREATER need for volunteers to teach ONLINE, on Zoom. We are seeking those who are comfortable with Zoom, and preferably those who have LED a zoom meeting before (knowing how to screen share a document, annotate the document on screen, etc is a PLUS :), but also happy to have volunteers who are willing to learn how to do this! As a volunteer, you can do 1 to 2 nights per week. Casa San Jose offers three sessions a year: a Spring session from January to May, Summer session in June and July, and a Fall session from Sept. to November, with no classes in December. Stay with us for just one season, or stay as long as you like! While previous teaching / ESL experience is not required, it's always welcomed! You will be able to observe classes before deciding if you'd like to volunteer with us. You may choose to co-teach a class with another volunteer or teach on your own one to two nights a week. Knowledge of Spanish is also not required, but of course, it's welcomed! It's certainly helpful to know some basic Spanish when teaching the beginner level, but it's absolutely possible to teach it without. We can show you how! If you express interest in this opportunity, Trisha Powell, ESL Coordinator, will reach out to you to set up a brief one-on-one meeting on Zoom to learn more. Volunteer: Database Project for Meals on Wheels -This could be fun!!Our meals on wheels program is currently using a MS Access Database that is hosted online and our problem is that is has become very expensive (over $2000/yr) and our small program cannot afford this much longer. The issue is that the database code was written by a large meals on wheels and modified for our use. When we asked if the database can simply be installed on our PC, we were told that it's not possible the way it is written. Just for kicks, I started dabbling with Chat GPT and the database. It quickly knew much of the data needed for a meals on wheels program and seems promising. I'm not an expert in writing code and get rather lost, but for someone with experience, it will be simple to understand. Looking for some guidance and assistance in setting up a Database for a Meals on Wheels Program. Let's see how far AI can go! I'm hopeful that it won't take up too much of your time. Most everything should be able to happen remotely as well as at a time that is convenient for you. This would be huge for our program if you choose to help because a small organization simply cannot afford to hire and pay for a custom written database. That being said, after the program is set up and running successfully, we would be willing to discuss some type of fee for future maintenance if needed (there always seem to be glitches/oddities that come up with databases). While we are currently using MS Access, but it doesn't need to be. If you find that SQL or perhaps oven something like Apache open source software would be preferred, I'm open to suggestions. I hope to hear from you and thanks for the consideration. Agency: PitCare, Inc. Volunteer: Become a Puppy Sitter for a Service Dog in Training - PittsburghRaising a skilled service dog requires the dedication and efforts of many people, working together to positively impact the life of a wounded Veteran. Puppy Sitters play an important role by providing a safe, nurturing environment for service dogs in training on a temporary basis. Volunteer: Working With Youth!Volunteers can fulfil a wide variety of tasks at the Lab, mainly focused on two different areas: Laboratory and Education. You may volunteer in both areas, or you may volunteer in one area. You may also be cross-trained into one area or another depending on personal interest. Descriptions are provided merely to give more details. Education: The Citizen Science Lab offers a wide range of educational opportunities for youth in Pittsburgh. These include programs occurring within the Laboratory in South Hills, offsite at local schools and community organizations, and even some occurring virtually to reach youth in the comfort of their own homes. Programs include our series of month-long weekly homeschool classes, multi-year initiatives, birthday parties, grant-funded opportunities for underserved youth, and individual programs for groups of any type. Topics cover a wide range of STEM disciplines from physics and microbiology to engineering and technology. All lessons are intended to be experiential and hands-on for our students. Laboratory: We house a wide variety of professional grade lab equipment to be used for our programs, and by independent researchers who otherwise might not have access to a laboratory space. In order to support our educational programming, this often requires inventorying, cleaning, and maintaining this equipment for use. This also requires the creation of bacterial cultures, agar plates, chemical solutions, and other laboratory materials for use in programming. Commonly used laboratory equipment include: Autoclave, Ultra-Low Temperature Freezer, Centrifuge, Water Baths, Thermocycler, DNA Sequencer, Incubator, Hot Plate, Fume Hood, Aerial Drone, 3D Printer, and more.
