Volunteer Needs From: Pittsburgh Cares

Volunteer: The North Side community needs your help!

At Northside Common Ministries (NCM), we are committed to building those bridges that connect our neighbors in need to an improved quality of life, while tearing down the walls that keep the hungry and homeless from success.

An affiliate unit of Goodwill of Southwestern Pennsylvania, NCM operates the Pleasant Valley Emergency Shelter for men and male-identifying individuals aged 18 and older, the Northside Food Pantry, and a Permanent Housing Program for those with disabilities.

We can’t do all that we do without YOU! NCM’s work is supported and facilitated by hundreds of passionate volunteers throughout the year. We need caring and committed people from the community and neighboring organizations to aid clients shopping in the food pantry and to help provide evening meals to the men’s shelter residents.

Volunteer: Goodwill Volunteer Opportunity: Daytime SCIENCE Tutors Needed for Adult Students (Junior High Level Sciences)

Adult Education ONLINE Classroom volunteer assistants needed at Goodwill of Southwestern PA (on Zoom)

Goodwill of Southwestern PA is looking for individuals who enjoy helping others to make an impact in the adult learning community by assisting instructors in the online classroom. We are mainly looking for volunteers who can work with students ONLINE on Science, with direction provided by the classroom teacher. Our students will need help with work on reading for meaning in science, designing and interpreting science experiments, and using numbers and graphics in science in order to prepare for the GED tests to obtain their High School Equivalency diplomas.

Tutors can meet with students 3-4 hours a week. Currently, we have a need for tutors who can meet during the day. Volunteers should have their High School Diploma or High School Equivalency. It would be nice for volunteers to have or be working toward, a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in any field, but we just ask that you have a desire to help adult students achieve their educational goals! An interest in the subject matter is always a plus!

We would love to have a volunteer help us for at least 4-6 months, and we can of course work with days you need to be off, vacations, etc, as long as we know ahead of time. If you cannot volunteer for as long as 4-6 months, but you are really interested, please reach out and we can discuss what works for you.

Please confirm your interest here (by selecting "Sign Up").

If you have any questions, please contact Ashley Reilly, Education Volunteer Coordinator by text at 412-498-0412 or by email at ashley.reilly@goodwillswpa.org.

NOTE: We can only use volunteers who reside in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland.

Volunteer: Goodwill Volunteer Opportunity: Daytime MATH Tutors Needed for Adult Students (Basic Math Up to Algebra 3)

Goodwill of Southwestern PA is looking for individuals in Pennsylvania or one of the adjacent states who enjoy helping others to make an impact in the adult learning community by assisting instructors in the ONLINE classroom.
Hi there! We have some students in our high school equivalency diploma (GED) program who need help to pass their math exams. They are in specific need of tutors who are available during the day. It could be a minimum of 3 hours (2 sessions of 1.5 hours) or up to 4 hours each week.
If you have experience teaching basic math and algebra skills and are available during the day, please reach out and we can talk more! If you don't have experience with this but are comfortable teaching someone these basic skills and believe you have the patience to work with an adult learner who struggles with these skills, please reach out.
To help one of these students, you'd first meet with me briefly on Zoom to go over things, fill out a volunteer application, complete a free and quick PA criminal background check, and then we'd help you to learn about what students need to know for this exam. Once you're prepped, you could meet with the student on Zoom. Support is always available from me, the Volunteer Coordinator, and from our adult education instructors.

Six-month commitment minimum please. Our volunteers do take time off here and there for trips they take, vacation, holidays, etc, but overall, 3-4 hours per week on average is required. Thank you for considering this opportunity!
Interested individuals are encouraged to apply by confirming your registration here (by selecting "Sign Up"). If you have any questions, you can contact me, Ashley Reilly, Education Volunteer Coordinator, by text at 412-498-0412 or by email at ashley.reilly@goodwillswpa.org
