Volunteer: Downtown High School Afterschool Program Volunteers Needed

The Cellar is a year-round, non-academic hangout space for students in grades 9–12, located in the basement of First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh (320 Sixth Avenue, Downtown Pittsburgh – entrance on Sixth Avenue).  Tuesday through Thursday, each week, 60+ students from over 30 different schools gather to connect, relax, and build community.

Students can enjoy:
• Pool table & foosball
• Video games
• Arts & crafts
• Board games
• Basketball and more

Program Hours: Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays | 3–6 PM

We are looking for Christian men and women who have a heart for God and for urban youth to serve as volunteers. Help us create a welcoming, safe, and encouraging space by:
• Arriving at 2 PM to help prepare and distribute snacks (hotdogs, nachos, etc.)
• Monitoring basketball activities
• Assisting with arts & crafts
• Simply being a caring, positive adult presence

The church can help you obtain the specific clearances required to volunteer with minors at no cost if you do not already have them. Pennsylvania Act 153 requires all volunteers who work with minors to have a PA Child Abuse History Clearance and a PA State Police Criminal History Record Check. In addition, an FBI Criminal History Record Check is required for anyone who has lived outside of Pennsylvania at any time within the past 10 years. A waiver is available for individuals who have lived continuously in Pennsylvania for the past 10 years.
