Mission: Sojourner House and Sojourner House MOMS (Mentoring, Opportunity, Motivation, Spirituality) provide compassionate, faith-based residential recovery services to mothers and children in the Pittsburgh area. We help mothers with substance use disorder learn to break the intergenerational cycle of poverty and substance use while rebuilding damaged relationships with their children. Sojourner House believes women can build a brighter future when surrounded by what means most to them: their children.

Volunteer Need: We are seeking individuals to assist with childcare in our residential treatment building while their mothers are participating in group therapy, classes, and other therapeutic activities. 

Scheduling: The greatest need for childcare support is during recurring classes and activities. These generally occur between 10am-11am, 12pm-1pm, and 4pm-7pm, but if you are interested in helping with childcare, let us know and we will work with you to find a time that fits for your schedule!

Requirement: Background checks are required for all volunteers who interact with the children in our program.

Sojourner House's signature event is the Annual Victorian Tea. The Victorian Tea is entering it's 23rd year on April 18, 2027. The event will be held at the Wyndham Grand Downtown and we anticipate a crowd of 350 people. The Victorian Tea is a celebratory afternoon with traditional "High Tea" attire and fare, socializing, and fundraising activities. We are looking for volunteers to join the planning committee for this year's event. The planning committee meets regularly starting in September and volunteers can expect to assist with:

Volunteer Need: We are seeking individuals and/or groups to provide educational, parenting, cooking, health and wellness classes or arts and crafts activities for the women and children in our residential treatment program.

Scheduling: Activities are scheduled around the program's existing treatment schedule. Currently, there is general availability between 1pm to 6pm Monday through Saturday for activities to be scheduled. If you have an idea for a class, skills, or activity you would like to share with our families, let us know and we will work with you to confirm your activity and find a time to come in!

Volunteer Need: We are seeking motivated volunteers to assist with administrative tasks related to day to day operations at both our administrative office and our residential treatment program. Responsibilities in our administrative office include maintaining volunteer databases, creating and distributing recruitment materials, copying/scanning, preparing mailings, and assembling outreach kits. Responsibilities at our residential treatment program include sorting and organizing donations, inventorying and restocking apartment supplies, assembling grab-bags for new intakes, and more.

This role offers an opportunity to develop organizational and communication skills while making a positive impact in our community. Some technology or comfort with using technology is preferred but we do have other projects that do not require technology.

Scheduling: Anytime between 8:30 to 4:30 Monday through Friday.
