Volunteer Needs From: Pittsburgh Cares

Volunteer: Train to teach volunteer-led ONLINE English classes 1-2 evenings Mon-Th

Join us at Casa San Jose as a volunteer ONLINE English teacher for adult immigrants!

Casa San Jose is a non-profit serving the Latino community in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas and it offers adult English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to Spanish-speaking adults, 18+, in Allegheny and Beaver Counties in four evenings a week, 7:00 to 8:30pm. Classes are offered ONLINE as well as in East Liberty, Mount Lebanon and Ambridge (in Beaver County).

At the moment, we have a GREATER need for volunteers to teach ONLINE, on Zoom. We are seeking those who are comfortable with Zoom, and preferably those who have LED a zoom meeting before (knowing how to screen share a document, annotate the document on screen, etc is a PLUS :), but also happy to have volunteers who are willing to learn how to do this!

As a volunteer, you can do 1 to 2 nights per week. Casa San Jose offers three sessions a year: a Spring session from January to May, Summer session in June and July, and a Fall session from Sept. to November, with no classes in December.

Stay with us for just one season, or stay as long as you like!

While previous teaching / ESL experience is not required, it's always welcomed! You will be able to observe classes before deciding if you'd like to volunteer with us. You may choose to co-teach a class with another volunteer or teach on your own one to two nights a week.

Knowledge of Spanish is also not required, but of course, it's welcomed! It's certainly helpful to know some basic Spanish when teaching the beginner level, but it's absolutely possible to teach it without. We can show you how!

If you express interest in this opportunity, Trisha Powell, ESL Coordinator, will reach out to you to set up a brief one-on-one meeting on Zoom to learn more.
